That Was Me

There was a man in a Midwest bar
Falling into a whiskey glass
Makin love to a steel guitar
Makin time with every girl he passed
That fool thought that he knew all there was
He ran wild, just like a fool always does
His life, was one long Friday night

That was me then, not so far away
When I could pretend, everybody else was
Half asleep and missin what was real
But now I see
That was me

There was a girl with a sunset smile
Make a man wanna turn off time
And lay there for a long, long while
In her arms and let it shine
She gave her hand to a guitar man
Then he left never known what he had
Why … how could he be so blind

That was me then, not so far away
When I could pretend, everybody else was
Half asleep and missin what was real
But now I see
That was me

That was me then, but not anymore
If I could respend just one day before
Girl, I can be the man that I should have been
Oh please believe

That was me then, not so far away
When I could pretend, everybody else was
Half asleep and missin what was real
But now I see
That was me
